So, you think it might be time for a career change. Now what?
Often recognising it’s time for a career change is the easy part. Knowing where to even start in figuring out what you want to do can be somewhat trickier. After all you’ve probably invested quite a few years and a significant amount of effort building the career you’re currently in, so much so that you’re not sure if doing anything else is even feasible.
Well it absolutely is. Of course some things will take more retraining than others but once you’ve identified what you really want to do everything else is figureoutable.
Along the long and somewhat winding path to figuring out my purpose I’ve read many books and learned from a multitude of coaches and what I know for sure is that our purpose is to live as the fullest expressions of who we are.
That might seem a bit vague and completely unhelpful when you’re trying to figure out what career is right for you, but looking back over my journey it’s the place I’d start.
Before setting out to decide what you want to DO you need to get clear on who you want to BE and the kind of life you want to live. Career change is rarely only about changing jobs. It’s about finding work that enables you to be the best version of yourself and to live a life that brings you joy each and every day.
All that being said, whether you’re looking to find your life purpose, start a business or simply find a new career path, these are some of the resources I’d recommend to get you started.
Danielle Laporte is one of my go to writers and thinkers. Her book The Desire Map will guide you to finding out how you want to feel in life and how to craft goals that will bring you those feelings.
Her book Firestarter Sessions is an inspirational guide for those of you who might be looking to become entrepreneurs.
Marie is an entrepreneur who helps people to start and grow businesses. She has a huge amount of inspirational videos and resources on her website www.marieforleo.com that are valuable even if you’re not looking to start a business.
The Ambition Plan:
This is a site for women full or resources that will help you decide whether a career change is really for you and how to go about it. https://theambitionplan.com/
Finding a Future that Fits by Louise Presley-Turner: This is the book that kick started my career change journey.
My final piece of advice would be to make sure you don’t fall into the trap of trying to see the whole staircase before you make a move. Just start with the first step and trust yourself to take the next step after that and the one after that.
It’s all too easy to spend years waiting until you’ve figured out the exact right career for the rest of your life. But in truth all any of us can know is what’s the next right step today and trust that it’s leading us where we’re meant to go.
And of course, if you feel I’m the right coach to collaborate with you on your journey to living on purpose then head over to my programmes page to find out how we can work together.
